This is best done when you pay your physician or laboratory or hospital personally. Even the wealthy have difficulty doing so in this age of high-tech care. But high-tech care occurs primarily in the hospitals and thus hospital insurance is the best hedge against personal catastrophe. This is coupled with surgical care, trauma and emergency care. The money saved will more than pay for the deductible plus the cost of routine outpatient care. This will avoid excessive cost because the patient will be able to oversee the benefits and thus avoid the excessive costs.
